Rake

The degree of mast rake determines, to a large extent, how much weather helm your boat will have. For a masthead rig, the amount of rake (inclination aft) depends on the design; it is usually 1.5% of the mast height above the gooseneck. For a fractional rig, this number – once again dependent on the design – will be between 2% and 3%. Negative mast bend is bad for the stability of the mast and may cause you to lose it over-board. The rake is therefore a percentage of the P-measurement.
